Lithuania intends to recover losses from Belarus due to the closed border
Vilnius is considering a ban on the transportation of Belarusian goods by rail due to Lithuanian trucks stuck on the border. This was announced on November 8 by Ignas Dobrovolskas, Adviser to the Lithuanian Prime Minister, to the national radio LRT.
"The issue of long—term restrictions on the transportation of Belarusian railway goods through the territory of Lithuania is being considered," he said.
On November 5, Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginene announced that the republic would appeal to Belarus to open the border and allow Lithuanian trucks to return. She clarified that negotiations on opening the border are already underway, but this will happen only once for the return of Lithuanian trucks. The border of the two countries will remain closed anyway.
On November 1, the State Customs Committee (SCC) of Belarus announced that Lithuanian cargo transport would be allowed to return to Lithuania only after the opening of checkpoints at the border. Also, due to the decisions taken, almost 5,000 units of Lithuanian tractors and trailers were blocked on the territory of Belarus. Lithuania completely closed the border with Belarus for a month on October 29.
