Regular use of laundry conditioners can pose a potential health hazard and harm the environment. This was announced on November 8 by Andrey Dorokhov, Associate Professor of the Department of Inorganic Chemistry named after A. N. Reformatsky RTU MIREA.

According to the expert, most of the products are based on cationic surfactants, in particular dialkyldimethylammonium chloride, which makes the fabric soft and eliminates static electricity. However, such compounds can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions.

"Such compounds are strong allergens and can irritate the skin, especially sensitive or prone to atopic dermatitis. Regular contact with the remnants of such substances on the tissue can lead to contact dermatitis, accompanied by itching, redness and rash. For younger children, whose skin is more permeable and whose immune system has not yet been fully formed, the risk of adverse reactions increases significantly," the chemist said in an interview with the newspaper.Ru».

Another potentially dangerous component is synthetic flavors. According to Dorokhov, they contain dozens of chemical compounds, some of which can penetrate the skin and have a systemic effect on the body.

"The persistent fragrance, which many associate with cleanliness, is actually a source of volatile organic compounds that pollute indoor air and can cause respiratory symptoms in asthmatics and people with other respiratory diseases," he explained.

The chemist added that mouthwashers are also harmful to the environment, as they decompose poorly in water and are toxic to aquatic organisms.

As a safe alternative, the expert suggested using hypoallergenic products labeled "Eco-friendly product" or "Roskachestvo." Also, according to Dorokhov, you can replace the air conditioner with ordinary vinegar diluted with water.

"Vinegar effectively rinses out the remnants of alkaline detergents and also softens the fabric, without leaving odors and dangerous chemical residues," he stressed.

Olga Ryzhkova, head of the SYNERGETIC knowledge management system, said on August 23 that it was necessary to take care of school uniforms before the start of the school year. It was clarified that Ryzhkova advises using a powder with bleaching ingredients for white shirts and turtlenecks, and a stain remover for local contamination.
