Oncologist Ivanov pointed out the ability of fiber to enhance immunotherapy
A diet rich in fiber can enhance the effect of anticancer drugs — every additional five grams of this dietary fiber reduces the risk of disease progression by almost a third. This was announced on 8 by Sergey Ivanov, an oncologist at the Scandinavian Health Center.
"The optimal diet includes at least 20 grams of fiber per day and about 30 different plant foods per week. At this level, according to research, the risk of progression is reduced by about a third," he said in an interview with the newspaper.Ru».
According to the specialist, patients who consume at least 20 grams of fiber per day respond better to drugs that block the PD-1 protein, such as nivolumab and pembrolizumab. However, taking probiotic supplements, on the contrary, is associated with less favorable treatment results.
The doctor noted that fiber contained in vegetables, fruits, legumes and cereals supports the intestinal microbiome and promotes the production of short-chain fatty acids. These substances activate T cells involved in the immune response against the tumor. According to Ivanov, the microbiome affects not only digestion, but also the work of immune cells throughout the body, helping the body recognize and destroy malignant cells.
To maintain the microbiome, the doctor advises making half of the plate from seasonal vegetables, a quarter from protein products (fish, poultry, eggs, soy products), and the rest from whole grains or legumes. He also recommends adding a handful of nuts or seeds and one fruit to your diet daily. According to him, the optimal goal is to consume at least 30 different plants per week, which helps maintain immunity and increases the effectiveness of treatment.
On October 31, Professor Alexander Seryakov, head of the SM Clinic cancer center, oncologist, hematologist, radiotherapist of the highest category, Doctor of Medical Sciences, attributed sausages, sausages and long-term milk to products that cause colorectal cancer. He also said that some eating habits, in particular the consumption of red meat, may affect the development of this disease.
