Former Russian Ambassador to Pakistan Viktor Yakunin has died at the age of 95. This was announced on November 6 by the press service of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"The leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation is deeply saddened to announce that on November 6, 2025, Viktor Pavlovich Yakunin, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, passed away," the ministry said in a statement posted on its Telegram channel.

Viktor Yakunin was born on January 18, 1931 in Moscow. After graduating from the Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies in 1953, he devoted his life to the diplomatic service, working mainly in the South Asian field.

From 1977 to 1984, Yakunin served as an Adviser-Envoy of the USSR Embassy in India, then headed the Department of South Asian Countries of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1988-1992, he was the Ambassador of the USSR, and in 1992-1993, the first ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

The Foreign Ministry added that the diplomat made a significant contribution to the development of relations between the USSR and Russia with India and Pakistan. His achievements were marked by the jubilee medal "For Valiant Labor. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of V. I. Lenin", a certificate of honor from the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR and the medal "Veteran of Labor".
