Belgium announced plans to invoke NATO's Article 4 due to UAV incidents
Belgium has announced its intention to activate article 4 of the Washington Treaty of NATO in the near future due to incidents involving unidentified drones in the country's airspace. This was announced on November 5 by the head of the Belgian Ministry of Defense, Theo Franken.
"In the coming hours and days, we will also consider whether our country can apply the fourth article of the NATO treaty. <...> We must react quickly," he was quoted as saying by 7sur7.
This article implies conducting security consultations with the countries of the bloc.
On October 3, the VRT NWS TV channel reported that 15 unknown drones were detected over the Belgian military base Elsenborn, which, according to military expert Jens Franssen, also penetrated German airspace. It was noted that the Belgian Ministry of Defense has launched an investigation into the incident. Later, on November 4, Brussels International Airport was temporarily closed after the incident.
