- Vucic called on the mother of the deceased at the train station in Novi Sad to stop the hunger strike
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has called on Dijana Hrka, the mother of a man killed in the collapse of a canopy at the railway station in Novi Sad, to end her hunger strike outside the parliament building. He stated this on November 3 on the TV channel TV Prva.
Diyana Hrka, the mother of 27-year-old Stefan Hrka, who died on November 1, 2024 in the Novi Sad collapse, went on a hunger strike on Sunday, November 2, demanding to find those responsible for the tragedy and hold early elections. Initially, she tried to set up a tent on the steps of the parliament, but after being banned by the authorities, she settled down at an intersection in the center of Belgrade, reports journalist Sergei Petrov.
"I ask Mrs. Hrka to end her hunger strike. I understand everything and political performances, I ask you not to do this. I have respect for this, because I know how painful it is when you lost a child, I ask you to accept my condolences once again, but I also ask you to take care of your health," Vucic said.
Vucic also noted that some of the people who support her, including opposition politicians, are guided by their own interests.
On the evening of November 3, clashes continued against the backdrop of protests outside the Serbian parliament building: protesters tried to provoke the police, shouted offensive slogans, while supporters of the government organized counter-actions with patriotic music.
"Loud patriotic music is coming from the camp of supporters of the current President Aleksandar Vucic. In fact, everything is calm so far, but the crowd of protesters is constantly trying to provoke the police, shouting offensive slogans and trying to somehow shake up the situation. But in response, there is only music," Petrov concluded.
On November 3, Vucic announced the holding of early elections in Serbia in connection with the protests. It was clarified that discussions about new elections and their dates have been going on for several weeks.
Mass protests took place in the center of Belgrade on November 2. A crowd gathered outside the parliament building, expressing dissatisfaction with the decision of the authorities, who forbade the female activist to set up a tent and go on a hunger strike.
The next day, on November 3, the Serbian police detained a man who provoked riots. Petrov then said that the cries of the protesters, whose mood was tense, were so strong that they almost disrupted the recording of the report.
