The scientist estimated the cost of a potential tunnel between Chukotka and Alaska
The cost of the tunnel project, which could connect Chukotka with Alaska, is estimated in the range of $12-15 billion. Viktor Razbegin, a scientist and author of the project, told about this on November 4.
"Estimates of the cost of this tunnel range from $7-8 to $12-15 billion," he said.
The expert, in a conversation with RIA Novosti, noted that the significant variation in estimates is explained by the difference in approaches: some researchers take into account only the construction of the tunnel, while others also consider the creation of all necessary infrastructure and equipment.
The study of the technical feasibility of the project began back in the 1990s. According to the concept, the tunnel will consist of two transport and one service passage connected by breakdowns for maintenance and safety.
Taking into account the peculiarities of the Bering Strait, where two islands are located, the structure is supposed to be divided into three sections: a small one, about 4.5 km long, between the islands, and two main ones, each approximately equal to a Eurotunnel in length. The total length of the entire underground structure can range from 98 to 112 km.
On October 17, US President Donald Trump, during a meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, noted that the idea of creating a tunnel between Russia and Alaska was interesting. The Ukrainian leader also stated that he did not like such an initiative.
In turn, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova recalled on October 23 that the idea of building a tunnel between Russia and the United States had its development even at the end of the 19th century. According to her, this idea was later recalled as a possible symbol that could make it possible to establish relations between the USSR and the United States.
Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and special representative of the President of the Russian Federation for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries, announced on October 26 that the possibility of building a tunnel was being discussed. However, he did not disclose the details of the project.
