South Karelia is losing up to one €1 million per day due to the closure of the border with Russia. This was reported on November 1 by the Bloomberg news agency.

"According to estimates of South Karelia, the region loses €1 million in tourism revenue every day," the publication says.

The article also notes that Finnish entrepreneurs will have to close their businesses due to the lack of Russian tourists. In addition, in the city of Imatra, which is located near the border with the Russian Federation, the unemployment rate is 15%, which is significantly higher than the national average of 9.1%. The South Karelia region also has the fastest growth in unemployment among the younger generation.

On October 26, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo announced that the country might consider opening the border with Russia, but at the moment there are no prerequisites for a change in the situation.

Before that, on August 21, the Iltalehti newspaper reported that the Finnish authorities intend to erect fences at the "closest possible" distance from the border with the Russian Federation, which will be equipped with cameras, sensors and loudspeakers.
