Conducting nuclear tests by the United States can reduce the likelihood of conflict with the use of such weapons. This was announced on October 31 by the head of the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth.

According to the Secretary of Defense, US President Donald Trump has clearly outlined the need to maintain a reliable nuclear deterrent capability.

"This is the basis of deterrence. Understanding this and resuming [nuclear] tests is a very responsible approach to this. I think the likelihood of a nuclear conflict is reduced if you know what [arsenal] you possess and are confident that it is functioning properly," Hegseth stressed, as quoted by TASS.

He noted that the American "nuclear arsenal" plays a key role in ensuring stability.

On October 30, US Vice President Jay Dee Vance said that the US military needed to periodically test nuclear weapons. At the same time, he pointed out that the United States is actively working even with countries with which it is not on the best terms to limit the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

On October 29, Trump posted a statement on his Truth Social network, where he said that he had instructed the Pentagon to begin testing nuclear weapons "on an equal basis." According to the president, the process should begin "immediately." At the same time, earlier that day, Trump refused to answer a question from reporters about the reasons for the start of weapons testing.

On October 30, the European Union called on the United States to comply with its international obligations regarding nuclear nonproliferation after the announcement of the resumption of nuclear testing. The representative of the European Commission (EC), Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, added that she appeals to both Russia and the United States.
