- Scientists have proven the ability of running to correct the effects caused by harmful nutrition
A recent study has shown that physical activity can reverse many of the depressive and hormonal effects caused by poor nutrition. This was made possible by changes in intestinal metabolites and hormonal balance. This was reported on October 21 by Science Daily magazine.
Scientists from University College Cork, led by Professor Yvonne Nolan, have discovered specific metabolic processes that explain the ability of physical activity to help compensate for the harm caused by unhealthy eating habits. According to a study, voluntary jogging can reduce depression-like behaviors that occur when eating foods high in fat and sugar. These changes relate to both circulating hormones and metabolites produced in the intestine.
During the analysis, the team of scientists studied the effects of diet and physical activity on behavior and brain in rats. One group was given a standard diet, while the other was given a diet consisting of foods high in fat and sugar. Half of the rodents from each group were allowed to run on a treadmill. This allowed the researchers to distinguish between the effects of food quality and physical activity on brain behavior and functioning.
The results showed that even when eating unhealthy foods, regular jogging worked as an antidepressant. This confirms that physical activity can be beneficial for people who follow an appropriate diet.
Using an integrated metabolic approach, Professor Nolan's team found that a diet high in sugar and fat significantly alters intestinal metabolism, while exercise helped restore balance and partially normalize levels of certain metabolites such as anserin, indole-3-carboxylate and deoxyinosine, which play an important role in regulating mood.
According to the study, such a diet can affect the production of metabolites, which subsequently affect behavior. In particular, running helped to normalize the levels of certain metabolites and increased neurogenesis in the hippocampus, an area of the brain associated with emotions and memory. This discovery confirms that the quality of food can significantly alter the brain's ability to benefit from physical activity at the cellular level.
A blood test showed that rats following the wrong diet had a significant increase in insulin and leptin levels. At the same time, the indicators decreased in rodents engaged in physical activity. This allowed scientists to claim that exercise and exercise can help balance hormones associated with poor nutrition and prevent many disorders.
Although the study was conducted in rats, the scientists plan to expand the research to humans to determine how improving physical activity can help combat depression and other problems caused by poor nutrition. These findings may have a significant impact on treatment recommendations for depression and other lifestyle-related mental illnesses.
Earlier, on October 28, BBC Science Focus magazine pointed out the impact of saturated fat foods on the body's perception of seasonal changes. According to the publication, some foods, such as snacks, can confuse the body's internal clock in winter and encourage it to accumulate more fats.
