The President of Georgia supported the ban of some opposition parties
On October 29, Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili supported the initiative of the ruling Georgian Dream party to ban three opposition political forces, including the United National Movement of former leader Mikheil Saakashvili.
The day before, Sputnik Georgia reported on its Telegram channel that the Georgian Dream had filed a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court to ban three opposition parties: Unity - UNM, Coalition for Change: Gvaramiya, Melia, Girchi, Droa, and Strong Georgia — Lelo, for the people, for freedom!".
"When they (the opposition. — Ed.) so purposefully harming the political environment with foreign finances, in my opinion, conditions arise for such political parties not to exist in our political space," TASS quoted him as saying.
In turn, the speaker of the Georgian parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, clarified on October 28 that the ban would not affect a number of other factions. Among them are "Federalists", "Droa", "Girchi — more freedom", "European Georgia", "Agmashenebeli Strategy". The parliamentarian explained these exceptions by the lack of a legitimate political force among these parties.
"There are a number of parties that do not have significant influence, including the real prospect of overcoming the electoral barrier, so there is no need to ban them at this stage. The issue of their unconstitutionality may be on the agenda later if they gain significant influence on political processes," Sputnik Georgia quoted him as saying.
On October 4, protests against the ruling Georgian Dream party began in Tbilisi. They occurred against the background of the ongoing parliamentary elections in the country. Correspondent Giorgi Jabishvili, who covered the protesters' march, noted that not only Georgian national flags could be seen in the crowd, but also American flags. The protesters broke the fence near the presidential palace.
Later, on October 19, the Bm portal.ge, citing the Georgian Interior Ministry, reported that 14 protesters on Rustaveli Avenue were detained in Tbilisi because they artificially blocked the roadway and obstructed traffic.
