MIcrosoft and OpenAI have signed a new cooperation agreement
Microsoft has entered into a long—term agreement with the developer of the ChatGPT neural network, OpenAI. This was announced on October 28 by the Microsoft press service on its website.
"As we enter the next phase of this partnership, we have signed a new definitive agreement that builds on our foundation, strengthens our partnership, and creates the conditions for the long—term success of both organizations," the statement said.
According to the document, Microsoft will receive a 27% stake in OpenAI Group PBC. This package is estimated at about $135 billion. The agreement also provides for the transformation of OpenAI's commercial division into a socially useful corporation and recapitalization.
As part of the deal, Microsoft retains exclusive rights to OpenAI products created using Azure tools (Microsoft's cloud platform and service), pending the creation of universal artificial intelligence (AI). These rights have been extended until 2032 and also apply to developments after the advent of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence).
OpenAI gets more autonomy — it will be able to develop products with third parties and host them in any cloud, except for API products that will remain on Azure. The startup also signed a contract for the purchase of additional Azure services for $ 250 billion.
A separate clause of the agreement was the right of OpenAI to provide API access to government customers in the field of national security, regardless of the cloud service provider, and to produce models with open weights.
Earlier that day, it was reported that PayPal had entered into an agreement with OpenAI to integrate its digital wallet into the ChatGPT platform. PayPal shares jumped 13% on the back of the news. This integration makes PayPal one of the first companies involved in OpenAI's efforts to expand the use of ChatGPT for e-commerce.
