The expert spoke about the connection of genetics with heredity and the environment
Intelligence is linked to genes, but its development depends not only on heredity, but also on environmental influences. Anastasia Chebotareva, a geneticist at the Genotek Medical and Genetic Center, told about this on October 27.
The geneticist explained that intelligence is determined by genes, but it is not inherited in the same way as eye color or nose shape. According to her, the inheritance of mental abilities can be compared to the creation of a complex symphony, which involves many genes interacting with each other and with external factors such as experience gained through education and social interaction.
Chebotareva identified three main types of intelligence: verbal, general and non-verbal. Verbal intelligence is related to the ability to effectively use language to communicate and express thoughts. General intelligence includes the ability to learn, solve problems, and make decisions, while nonverbal intelligence focuses on the perception of visual and sensory information. According to the expert, verbal intelligence is the most genetically determined.
Studies involving 452,864 people have shown that verbal intelligence is more predictable based on genetic data than general or non-verbal intelligence. This may indicate that verbal abilities are more often inherited. People often choose partners with similar characteristics, and for most, verbal communication is the most important type of interaction.
"In the case of intelligence, there is a close interaction of genetic predispositions and the external environment. Sometimes these two components are difficult to distinguish," she said in an interview with the newspaper.Ru».
The expert clarified that, for example, people with a predisposition to high intelligence can choose a more stimulating environment, which contributes to the further development of their cognitive abilities. Thus, genes influence intelligence, but it is important to take into account the influence of the outside world.
On October 20, Tatiana Markova, Head of the Scientific Advisory Department of the N.P. Bochkov Medical and Genetic Research Center, geneticist, MD, explained the importance of accurate diagnosis of hereditary diseases. According to her, the symptoms of hereditary pathologies can affect various organs and disguise themselves as other diseases, as a result of which patients have been visiting different specialists for years without receiving an accurate diagnosis.
