The Lithuanian authorities have proposed to impose restrictions on transit to Kaliningrad amid a series of incidents involving air probes used by smugglers. This statement was made on October 26 by the President of the country, Gitanas Nauseda.

"Among the options that need to be discussed are the long—term closure of the border with Belarus and the restriction of transit to Kaliningrad," the BNS news agency quoted the Lithuanian leader as saying.

According to him, smugglers from Belarus use weather balloons to transport cigarettes, and balloons threaten security. Because of this, Vilnius Airport had to temporarily suspend operations three times during the week. No such cases have been reported from the Kaliningrad region of Russia.
