- The WSJ reported on the CIA's positive assessment of the possibility of a meeting between Trump and Putin
Analysts at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) saw the potential for negotiations between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin on resolving the conflict in Ukraine. The agency's estimates regarding the likelihood of finding common ground between Moscow and Washington were optimistic. This was reported on October 26 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing sources.
As the newspaper notes, at the beginning of the Trump administration, American officials repeatedly turned to intelligence with requests for the preparation of classified analytical materials and briefings on the Ukrainian topic. Their goal was to understand what Russia's intentions are in Ukraine and how ready Moscow is to negotiate an end to the conflict.
"CIA analysts, in response to requests from the administration, have prepared assessments that conclude that Trump may find opportunities to negotiate with Putin. The CIA's assessments were sometimes optimistic about the prospects of finding common ground with the Russian leadership," the publication says.
