The coach of the Russian national gymnastics team commented on Melnikova's victory at the World Cup

On October 23, the head coach of the Russian national gymnastics team, Valentina Rodionenko, commented on Angelina Melnikova's victory in the all-around at the World Championships in Jakarta, saying that the gymnast "did the impossible."

"It's been four years since I've competed among such rivals, and I haven't been on the podium. To make a mistake on the balance beam, to go free and do the impossible. <...> She did the incredible. Clever girl!" said Rodionenko in an interview with the newspaper Sport-Express.

Rodionenko also noted that after the mistake on the balance beam, Melnikova had to show the perfect floor exercise program in order to beat the three main competitors. The coach personally congratulated the gymnast on the phone, calling her performance an impossible achievement.

The World Gymnastics Championships are being held in Jakarta from October 19 to October 25. Russian athletes compete in the tournament in a neutral status.

In the women's team, the bid for the world championship in Jakarta is obvious, but the men have personnel problems.

Earlier that day, Melnikova became a two-time world champion in the individual all-around in gymnastics. The athlete took first place at the World Championships in Jakarta, scoring 55.066 points in the sum of four exercises. She won a medal at the World Gymnastics Championships for the first time since 2021.

In addition to Rodionenko, Mikhail Degtyarev, Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation and head of the Russian Olympic Committee, congratulated Melnikova. He called the gymnast's performance intriguing and noted that Melnikova showed a champion character, managing to pull herself together after a mistake on the balance beam and performing brilliantly in floor exercises.
