It is possible to get rid of stuttering if it is caused by neurotic reasons related to psychological trauma. Eva Artemova, a speech therapist and professor at MGPPU, told about this on October 23.
According to the expert, with stuttering caused by psychological factors, eliminating the injury allows you to completely get rid of the symptoms. However, with an organic form associated with brain damage, it is only possible to reduce the severity of the disorders.
"If stuttering is caused by neurotic causes and we eliminate the psychological trauma, then we can get rid of the symptoms completely. But if it is a severe organic form of stuttering, then you can only reduce its manifestations. It will not be possible to completely eliminate the problem," Artemova said in an interview with Gazeta.Ru».
She gave the example of a student with stuttering caused by a traumatic brain injury. Thanks to breathing exercises and smooth speech techniques, the child learned to control pronunciation and did not stutter at school, although at home he sometimes encountered repetitions due to fatigue of the nervous system.
The professor added that in stressful situations, a person can lose control of speech, and then stuttering can return, sometimes appearing stronger than before.
Scientists from the Department of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) used analysis to establish a link between participants' musical abilities in rhythm perception and speech and language disorders such as language development disorders, dyslexia and stuttering. It was clarified that the evidence highlighted a "moderate but constant risk factor for speech, language, and reading disorders" with a deficit in perception of musical rhythm.
