Lavrov stated the impossibility of an immediate end to the conflict in Ukraine
An immediate cease-fire in Ukraine means forgetting about solving its root causes. This was announced on October 21 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
"Now it has begun to sound from Washington that it is necessary to stop immediately [along the front line]. <...> Well, you know, if you just stop, it means forgetting about the root causes of this conflict," he said during a briefing.
Lavrov stressed that Russia remains faithful to the agreements reached during the talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump during the summit in Alaska. He also pointed out that the Trump administration had expressed its understanding of the causes of the Ukrainian crisis.
According to Lavrov, attempts at an immediate ceasefire will not lead to a solution to the problem, as they will not eliminate the actual genocide of the Russian and Russian-speaking population, which was carried out by Kiev even before President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky came to power. Lavrov stressed that such steps would mean a refusal to further resolve the situation, including restoring the rights of the Russian-speaking population of Ukraine.
"An immediate cease—fire, which is now suddenly being discussed again, in contrast to the need to resolve the essence of the problem and eliminate its root causes, would mean only one thing - that a huge part of Ukraine remains under the leadership of the Nazi regime," the minister concluded.
On October 19, the Financial Times (FT) newspaper reported that US President Donald Trump, during talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky at the White House on October 17, called on Kiev to accept Russia's terms. According to the newspaper, the meeting was tense. The American leader pointed to Ukraine's loss in the conflict and called on Zelensky to immediately conclude peace.
