Alcohol consumption in Russia has been minimal since 1999
Alcohol consumption in Russia in September of this year decreased to 7.84 liters per year per capita, the lowest level since 1999. Information about this follows from the data of the Unified Interdepartmental Information and Statistical System (EMISS).
According to RIA Novosti, in September 2025, the average alcohol consumption per Russian was 7.84 liters per year. Before that, in August, it was slightly higher — 7.93 liters. The last time alcohol consumption was close to these values was in 1999.
It is worth noting that the public information on this indicator before 2008 is based on limited data, as it includes only the official sale. At the same time, according to research, counterfeit products occupied a significant part of the alcohol market in the 1990s - they could account for up to two thirds of total sales.
According to the agency, the least drinking regions are located in the North Caucasus: in Chechnya, alcohol consumption was only 0.13 liters, in Ingushetia — 0.62 liters, in Dagestan — 0.89 liters, in Kabardino-Balkaria — 2.25 liters, in Karachay-Cherkessia — 2.63 liters.
Muscovites drink an average of 4.91 liters, while residents of St. Petersburg drink 6.55 liters."Газета.Ru ".
On September 19, it was reported that allowing the sale of alcohol via the Internet would negate the restrictions already imposed in Russia, as alcohol would be available online around the clock. It was noted that measures to limit the time of sale of alcohol are working well now, and if they allow its sale via the Internet, it will be a round-the-clock sale, and access to alcohol will be absolutely open.
