The trial on the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline may be completed after the interrogation of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder by the commission of the Landtag of Mecklenburg—Vorpommern. This opinion was expressed by the politician's lawyer Hans-Peter Huber in a conversation with Izvestia on October 17.

"I think that's the end of the [trial]. In a closed meeting, the commission still has to discuss whether to consider the interrogation of witness Schroeder completed," he said, answering the relevant question.

According to Huber, Schroeder "showed a fighting spirit" during the interrogation. The lawyer noted that the former German Chancellor actively defended his position, even when the questions were formulated with "discriminatory overtones."

"He always fought back, and as a lawyer, I rate it positively," Huber stressed.

He added that Schroeder, as a member of the supervisory board, could not have been aware of some details of the project's operational activities. Therefore, the trial, as the lawyer noted, has nothing to do with the decision that Schroeder made as a statesman.

The Bild newspaper reported on May 25 that Hanoverian bank Sparkasse Hannover blocked Schroeder's account a year ago due to fears of sanctions. According to the newspaper, in a letter to Schroeder, the bank expressed concerns that the organization could be sanctioned by the United States if funds were credited to the ex-chancellor's account from the operator of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. At the same time, it is clarified that the politician himself is not included in any sanctions list.

Before that, on May 22, Bild reported that Schroeder still positively evaluates the Nord Stream 2 project, and also calls for the "correct" import of natural gas from Russia.
