The Federal Antimonopoly Service has begun checking the validity of a sharp rise in herring prices in stores.

The validity of changes in prices for fish products in Russia is being checked. This was reported on October 15 in the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) to Izvestia.

Previously, an analysis of the price structure for the most fished fish species, including Pacific herring, was carried out. According to the results of the study, it was found that intermediaries between fish producers and retail chains have the greatest influence on price formation. There can be up to six intermediaries in the distribution chain, and their margins range from 5 to 50%. As a result, the price of fish products may increase by 2-3.5 times.

"The service notes that it checks the validity of price changes for fish products. Earlier, the agency sent requests to 37 fishing organizations that extract aquatic biological resources: pink salmon, pollock, cod, haddock, Pacific herring," the FAS said.

The service is currently analyzing information on processing, production and sales volumes, as well as the cost structure of fish products. If violations are detected, the FAS will take antimonopoly response measures.
