On October 15, Latvia began implementing a paid electronic queue system for citizens crossing the country's external border from Russia and Belarus. This was reported on the queue's electronic booking website.

"Starting from October 15, 2025, vehicles without registration in the Electronic Queue Booking System will not be able to cross the eastern border of Latvia, which means that it will no longer be possible to cross the border in a live queue," the publication says.

It is specified that the introduction of a paid queue is due to the need to increase security at border crossings and prevent traffic congestion. The new system will operate at the Grebneva, Terekhova and Paternieki border crossings.

According to the new rules, drivers are required to register in advance in the online booking system before arriving at the border. When registering, you must specify the checkpoint, date and time, and select the queue type. The cost of booking for one vehicle will be €9.3.

Earlier, on October 12, the Reuters news agency reported that the European Union has launched an electronic entry and exit system (EES), which provides for mandatory registration and collection of biometric data from citizens of non-EU countries. The system is designed to combat violations of the migration regime and will replace stamps in passports with electronic records of border crossings.
