- The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation told about changes in fraud schemes on dating sites
Scammers on dating sites have begun using more aggressive schemes to extort money from users. On October 13, the Department for the Organization of the fight against the illegal use of information and communication technologies (UBK) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia warned about this.
"Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to encounter an extortionist on dating sites. Scammers build trusting communication, receive intimate photos or personal data, and then begin to blackmail — they demand money for "silence." However, recently such schemes have become much more aggressive," the publication says.
It is clarified that the attackers began to require victims to send checks for the first transfers through "special" Telegram bots. After that, they claim that the funds were allegedly transferred to the accounts of the Ukrainian armed forces, and threaten to transfer this information to the "relevant authorities", demanding more and more amounts.
Another method of deception is to lure geolocation, with the threat of transmitting information to intelligence or even using drones. This method is often applied to minors.
UBK MIA strongly recommends that you be careful if communication on a dating site starts to develop too quickly, especially if the interlocutor is trying to switch to personal information or explicit content.
According to the agency, you should never send personal data to strangers, you should definitely check that communication is taking place with a real person, and not with a fake profile. In addition, experts recommend using reliable antivirus programs, regularly checking devices for malicious software, and not negotiating with blackmailers. In case of threats and extortion, it is necessary to contact the police immediately and save correspondence for evidence.
Earlier that day, Anton Ivanov, technical director of Kaspersky Lab, reported that phone scammers began pretending to be law enforcement officials, using their Telegram numbers to intimidate victims. After a person sees the number on the official website, the attacker continues to manipulate the psychological state, claiming that the call is important, and intimidates the person, claiming that he allegedly committed an offense related to the transfer of money.
