Lukashenko called the decision not to award Trump the Nobel Peace Prize stupid
On October 10, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko criticized the decision to award the Nobel Peace Prize, saying that it should have been awarded to US President Donald Trump, and not to his predecessor Barack Obama, who received it in 2009.
"This is complete stupidity. Trump deserved this Nobel Prize, he should have been given it," BelTA quoted him as saying.
According to the Belarusian leader, Trump has done a lot for peace, and the Nobel Committee has done a "very bad service" to peace processes in different regions. He noted that in recent years, the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded "just to whom."
"Especially remember the [former] President of the United States (Barack Obama. — Ed.), who did nothing at all. He became president and received this award," Lukashenko added.
On August 13, the White House announced the nomination of Trump by seven states for the Nobel Peace Prize. On September 2, Trump himself responded negatively to a journalist's question about his desire to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. He added that he wants to be treated fairly for his services as president of the United States.
However, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on October 10 to Venezuelan politician Maria Corina Machado for fighting for the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and striving for a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.
On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the decisions of the Nobel Committee had caused great damage to the prestige of the prize. The Russian leader added that if the American leader succeeds in completing all efforts to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, it will be a historic event and achievement.
