Alexander Ovechkin, the Washington Capitals forward and captain, said he aims to reach the 900-goal mark in the regular NHL championships. This was announced on October 8 by the official website of the NHL.

Despite the fact that the pursuit of the record of Canadian athlete Wayne Gretzky is behind him, this season the hockey player has other achievements. He needs to score three goals to become the first player to score 900 goals.

"Nobody has scored 900 goals yet. So it's going to be very interesting, and it's going to be a big number," Ovechkin said.

The hockey player admitted that he feels good, is looking forward to the upcoming season and sees the season as an opportunity for new achievements. He is still in no hurry to make a decision about continuing his career after this season.

According to him, he plans to talk to Chris Patrick, the general manager of the Capitals, or Ted Leonsis, the owner of the club, who support him in making decisions about the future.

"I'm just going to enjoy it," he added, saying he would focus on the current season and not jump to conclusions.

Ovechkin missed 16 games last season due to a fractured left fibula, which was the longest break of his career, but despite this, he finished third in the NHL in goals, scoring 44 goals.

The hockey player added that the preparation for the season has become more difficult than before, and an injury to his lower body forced him to miss several training sessions at the camp. However, Ovechkin recovered quickly and played in Washington's last two preseason games.

On September 18, journalist Tariq El-Bashir reported that Ovechkin had left training at the team's training camp due to a "lower body injury." Then the Washington Capitals started training in preparation for the new NHL season, which will begin on October 7.

On September 20, it was reported that Ovechkin was not included in the application for the Washington Capitals vs. Boston Bruins match. As a result, the Russian hockey player did not attend the first preseason match of the team.

On September 28, Ovechkin already had a full-fledged training session on the ice after his injury.
