- The NYT reported on the possible closure and de-energization of the Statue of Liberty due to the shutdown
The Statue of Liberty in New York can expect to be closed and de-energized, as federal funding for its maintenance will end next week. This was reported on October 2 by The New York Times (NYT).
The publication clarifies that the allocation of new funds is impossible due to the suspension of the federal government from October 1, while the authorities of the state of New York do not plan to incur the cost of maintaining one of the main attractions of the city.
"The torch of a statue can literally go out, and not because of the actions of God, a terrible storm, flood or hurricane, but because <...>..> in Washington, they forced the government to shut down," said the governor of the state, Kathy Hokul.
She added that even during the quarantine period due to the coronavirus pandemic, the statue remained open to visitors.
In the United States, on October 1, the government was suspended. Because of this, non-authorized personnel of federal agencies will be forcibly sent on unpaid leave. At the same time, some will continue to perform their work duties without a salary.
Prior to that, on September 30, Bloomberg reported that the threat of another shutdown in the United States would significantly increase the risks of a weakening dollar. Experts note that a government shutdown may weaken the dollar in the short term, especially with delays in the publication of economic data.
