Fraudsters in Russia have begun using a new scheme to mislead citizens by offering to "confirm the passport number by voice." This was announced on October 1 by the Department for the Organization of the fight against the illegal use of information and communication technologies (UBK) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

"In current fraudulent schemes, the first "attack" is almost always false and serves solely to achieve a psychological effect," the department's Telegram channel says.

According to the Interior Ministry, the attackers use fictitious but plausible threats: "your account has been hacked" or "a power of attorney has been issued" to make a person panic. A new method of fraudsters has become convincing citizens to confirm their passport number by voice.

An example of such a scheme was the case of a pensioner from Moscow. The scammers called him, introducing themselves as EMIAS employees, and asked him to confirm the information with his voice. The next day, a second call was received on behalf of Gosuslug with a notification about an alleged "account hack" and the need for "voice verification."

Then the scammers continued their actions through messengers, introducing themselves as employees of the "military prosecutor's office" and convincing the man of the urgent need for action to "save" funds and property.

The Interior Ministry stressed that there is no "voice confirmation of passport number" procedure, and any attempt to use such a method to gain access to significant data or resources is fraud.
