The situation on the Sun and in near-Earth space does not contribute to the completion of a magnetic storm, despite the low probability of a decrease in its intensity from the "red" to the "yellow" level. This was announced on October 1 at the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Institute of Space Research (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The geomagnetic storm that began on Tuesday morning, September 30, has been going on for about 30 hours.

"Despite the possibility of reducing the storm to the "yellow" level in the coming hours, the situation both in the Sun and in near—Earth space does not contribute to the normalization of the situation," the laboratory said in a Telegram channel.

Scientists note that over the past day, the parameters of the interplanetary environment have changed mainly for the worse. The speed of the solar wind in the vicinity of the Earth increased from 400 to 700 km/s, the plasma temperature increased from 100 to 300 thousand degrees. The intensity of the interplanetary magnetic field remains at a moderate value. On Tuesday, its peaks coincided with the peaks of fluctuations in the magnetic field.

"Currently, the magnitude of the field has decreased by half, which allows the storm to stay at a moderate level of G1-G2," the experts said.

The laboratory added that relatively short-term but more intense increases in the aurora zone were recorded on Tuesday evening.
