Lavrov pointed to Kellogg's pro-Ukrainian position
On September 30, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov assessed the recent statements by US President Donald Trump's special representative Keith Kellogg, noting their inconsistency with Washington's official position.
"Keith Kellogg <...> speaks from an absolutely pro—Ukrainian position, although President Trump always says that he is a mediator, and Ukraine and Russia should decide directly," the diplomat said at the XXII Annual Meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club in Sochi.
Lavrov also noted that Kellogg advises Kiev to accept the current situation with the territories and not worry about possible changes in the future, referring to the experience of the Baltic States after the collapse of the USSR. The Foreign Minister stressed that such rhetoric is at odds with Trump's words.
The diplomat also drew attention to the fact that the United States does not supply Tomahawk cruise missiles to everyone. In addition, if the United States believes that Ukraine will use these weapons responsibly, then it will be surprising, Lavrov added.
On September 26, The Telegraph newspaper, citing sources, reported on the request of Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky at a closed meeting with Trump to supply Kiev with Tomahawk cruise missiles with a range of over 1.6 thousand km. It is noted that at the moment it is unknown whether Kiev will receive weapons.
Later, on September 29, Dmitry Novikov, first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, told Izvestia that Washington's new statements about the transfer of long-range missiles to Ukraine could have consequences for Russian-American negotiations. He stressed that "so many problems and blockages have already formed in Russian-American relations that need to be resolved regardless of the Ukrainian conflict."
In addition, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, speaking about the supply of Tomahawk to Kiev, urged not to consider missiles a panacea for the Ukrainian army. He believes that weapons will not be able to change the course of a special military operation for the Ukrainian side.
