RAN: the strongest G3-level magnetic storm has begun on Earth in three months

The largest magnetic storm in the last three months has begun on Earth, the head of the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Institute for Space Research (IKI) said on September 30. RAN Sergey Bogachev.

"A sharp increase in geomagnetic fluctuations is being recorded," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

According to the latest data, the Kp geomagnetic activity index has reached a value of 7.33, which corresponds to a G3+ magnetic storm on a five-point scale. The expert added that previously a phenomenon of this level was recorded on the first day of summer after the release of a large solar prominence towards the Earth.

Bogachev stressed that the situation in outer space around the planet remains difficult due to increased solar activity.

Earlier, on September 15, a magnetic storm of a level close to G3 occurred on Earth due to the impact of a coronal hole on the Sun. This phenomenon is highly unstable and usually consists of a series of separate bursts, between which the situation normalizes.
