The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) approves the proposal of Russian President Vladimir Putin on the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (START Treaty), which is to comply with the terms of the agreement within a year after its expiration. This was announced on September 25 by the head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, on the sidelines of the World Atomic Week.

"Any efforts for peace and stability, [especially] in the field of nuclear weapons, are positive efforts. But the decision should be made by the United States and the Russian Federation," TASS quoted Grossi as saying.

The head of the IAEA also expressed the hope that the agency would see positive changes on this issue.

On September 22, the Russian president announced Russia's readiness to adhere to the restrictions under the START Treaty for another year after February 5, 2026. He added that the measure would become viable provided that the United States did not take steps that would undermine the balance of deterrence capabilities.
