- The doctor spoke about the relationship between breakfast time and the risk of premature death
Brunch may be associated with poor health and an increased risk of premature death, especially among the elderly. The researchers followed the participants for 22 years and found that those who tended to eat breakfast later had a lower ten-year survival rate. This was reported in the BBC Science Focus magazine.
The scientists observed how, over time, the participants began to shift the time of breakfast and dinner to a later time, which narrowed the overall window for eating during the day. The results of the study also highlighted that brunch can be associated with problems such as depression, fatigue, and poor oral health, especially in the elderly. These problems were more often observed in those who postponed breakfast until nine in the morning or later.
"Changes in the diet of older people, especially breakfast time, can serve as an easily traceable marker of their overall health," said Hassan Dahti, a nutritionist at Massachusetts General Hospital.
In addition, the researchers noted that the popularity of the practice of intermittent fasting, when people intentionally increase the intervals between meals and often postpone breakfast, could influence these results.
Psychotherapist Victoria Kolesnikova, in an interview with Izvestia, listed the first signs of anorexia. According to her, teenagers, under certain conditions, may have a painful conviction of their own "excessive fullness", such thoughts can be obsessive, overpriced, and sometimes delusional.
