In 2004, Mark Voegel, a resident of Dortmund, Germany, died in his apartment as a result of being bitten by a domestic black widow named Bettina, then his body was eaten by other domestic spiders and lizards. This was reported by The Mirror newspaper with reference to the police.

"A giant spider web enveloped him, spiders were everywhere. They were coming out of his nose and mouth. The larger pieces of flesh torn off by the lizards were collected and returned to the web of tarantulas and other bird-eating spiders," a police spokesman told the newspaper.

According to the confessions of law enforcement officers, Fegel lived in an apartment that resembled a mini-zoo. It contained more than 200 insects, lizards, snakes, poisonous frogs, as well as one Helmut gecko. Upon inspection of the scene, officers found the deceased man on a couch covered with cobwebs, as well as many open terrariums and cages. A strange green light was seen in the apartment, and spiders, including tarantulas, were everywhere, including coming out of the man's nose and mouth. According to law enforcement officials, Fegel died 1-2 weeks before his discovery.

The police described what they saw as a "horror movie," noting that spiders and other animals were eating the body of the deceased. Among the animals was a tarantula, which built a nest the size of a swallow on the ceiling, as well as numerous termites.

The Daily Mail reported on July 10 that colonies of "super ants" numbering up to 5 million individuals have been discovered in the UK. As the newspaper reported, the whole of Europe suffers from insects, as ants harm human life by destroying urban infrastructure and tearing up land in rural areas. Cases of gnawed electrical cables and disruption of the railway network have been reported.
