Russia is among the three countries with the largest gender pay gap.
By the end of 2024, the largest wage gap between women and men among the G20 countries was recorded in South Korea, India and Russia. This was reported by RIA Novosti on September 21, analyzing data from national statistical services and open sources.
"The biggest wage gap between the sexes was in South Korea, where women earn 32.5% less than men. India followed with a difference of 30.41%. Russia rounded out the top three with 30.36%," the publication says.
It should be noted that the statistics of the Russian Federation are based on data from 2023 due to the lack of new information.
In addition, the agency found significant gender wage gaps (above 20%) in Saudi Arabia (28.2%), Turkey (27.1%), Great Britain (26.8%), Argentina (26.33%), Japan (26.27%), Italy (24.8%). The list also includes France and Mexico, where women earn less than men by 23.7% and 21.6%, respectively.
A smaller gender earnings gap, in turn, was noted in Australia (10.7%), Canada (12.6%) and China (13%).
Alexander Safonov, a professor at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, said on June 7 that women's wages were about 70% of men's incomes, and the wage gap reached 30.4% last year. Safonov noted that there are several reasons why the wage gap between men and women persists. One of them is the employment structure, that is, women work in industries where wages are lower than in other economic sectors. In particular, in healthcare, education and social services, as well as in the fields of culture, leisure and sports, their share prevails.
