The 35th annual Nobel Prize Ceremony was held at Harvard. It is awarded for research that first makes you laugh and then makes you think. The winners were announced at a ceremony at Boston University. This was reported on the comic scientific journal Improbable Research.

Among the awardees are scientists who have conducted research in the most unusual areas, from the effect of alcohol on speech fluency to the "Teflon diet" and the need to repaint cows in zebras.

So, the American scientist William Bean won in the field of literature. He received the award for continuous analysis of one of his fingernails for 35 years. His son, Bennett, received the award for him.

In psychology, scientists Marcin Zazhenkowski and Gilles Gignac were awarded the prize for research that showed that when narcissists or other people are called smart, their self-perception of intelligence increases dramatically, which manifests itself in "grandiose" narcissism.

In the field of nutrition, Daniel Dandy, Gabriel Segniagbeto, Roger Meek and Luca Luiselli were awarded for studying lizards' dietary preferences. They found out that the rainbow agamas from Togo prefer pizza "Four cheeses" instead of hunting for arthropods.

In pediatrics, Julia Menella and Gary Beechamp received an award for their research on the effect of garlic in the mother's diet on the smell of breast milk, which helps babies to breastfeed longer.

In biology, Japanese scientists Tomoki Kojima, Kazato Oishi and Sai Sato were awarded for studying how striped cows can avoid fly bites. Their work has shown that black and white stripes on cows help repel insects, which can be an alternative to pesticides.

In chemistry, Rotem Naftalovich, Daniel Naftalovich and Frank Greenway received an award for their research on the "Teflon diet", in which polytetrafluoroethylene is used as a low-calorie filler. During the experiment, the mice lost weight despite an increase in food intake.

The Peace Prize was awarded to Fritz Renner, Inge Kersbergen, Matt Field and Jessica Werthmann for their research on the positive effects of alcohol on fluency in a foreign language.

Vikash Kumar and Sarthak Mittal from India distinguished themselves in engineering design for their research on the smell of shoes and its impact on the usability of shoe shelves. They suggested redesigning the shelves to take into account unpleasant odors.

In aviation, Francisco Sanchez, Mariana Melcon, Carmi Korin and Berry Pinshaw were awarded for their research on the effects of alcohol on flight and echolocation in bats.

In physics, Jacomo Bartalucci, Daniel Buziello, Matteo Ciarchi and other scientists from Italy received an award for studying cacio e pepe pasta sauce, which revealed the exact starch concentration at which the sauce coagulates into lumps.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that Japanese scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in Biology for a study that showed how camouflage in the form of black and white stripes on cows helps reduce the frequency of attacks by horseflies and other blood-sucking insects. It is specified that this study was published in 2019.
