On September 19, Norbert Roettgen, a deputy from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), a member of the ruling coalition of Germany, announced the need to create a "wall of drones" along the entire eastern border of NATO.

"We need protection from drones on the eastern flank of NATO, along the entire eastern border of NATO. So yes, there will be this wall," Roettgen said on the ZDF TV channel.

According to him, the methods of warfare have changed, and from this it was necessary to conclude even earlier that it was necessary to purchase drones. He noted the diverse range of drone use. According to him, NATO needs reconnaissance, defensive, strike and drone traps. According to Roettgen, this will become an integral part of the alliance's defense capability.

At the same time, Roettgen does not support the idea of fighting drones in Ukrainian airspace, as this would mean using NATO weapons outside the bloc's territory.

Earlier, on September 10, Bloomberg reported that the Bundestag had approved the German federal government's plan to purchase three additional Israeli-made Heron reconnaissance drones worth €1 billion. The purchase approvals are part of one of more than 80 military orders that German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius expects to be confirmed by the end of 2025. They also include 20 Eurofighter fighter jets and several thousand tanks and armored vehicles.

Bloomberg reported on July 28 that Germany's defense budget could double (to €162 billion) over the next four years, as Germany seeks to rearm on a large scale and meet NATO targets to increase defense spending to 3.5% of GDP.
