Russians were told about the harm of sugar in drinks for the body
Even with the same amount of sugar (30 grams), sugary drinks have a more pronounced negative effect on the body than food with the same content. This was reported on September 15 by the Chinese television channel CCTV.
The research methodology covered 29 major international papers from Europe, the USA, Asia, Australia and Latin America. The follow-up period reached 24 years, which made it possible to assess the long-term effects of sugar intake from various sources. The scientists took into account body mass index, total caloric intake and other lifestyle factors, but the risk of consuming sugar in drinks remained extremely noticeable.
Key research results confirm the high risk of developing type 2 diabetes with regular consumption of sugary drinks. So, each additional serving of a drink with a volume of about 355 ml increased the likelihood of the disease by 25%.
The authors of the study believe that even fruit juice increases the risk by about 5% per serving. A comparative analysis by the University of Bristol showed that drinking orange juice stimulates insulin production almost twice as much as eating whole oranges.
Harvard University's data confirms that sports do not compensate for the harm of sugar in drinks. The study involved more than 190,000 people who were followed for 15 years. The results showed that daily consumption of two or more servings of sugary drinks increases the risk of diabetes by 41%, while regular exercise reduced this figure to only 22%.
"Every sip of a sugary drink can contribute to the development of diabetes; physical activity reduces the damage, but does not eliminate it completely," the scientists emphasized.
The main danger lies in the metabolic differences between sugar in foods and beverages. The sugar contained in food is absorbed gradually due to the presence of fiber, proteins and fats, which stabilizes glucose levels. In drinks, sugar is "isolated" and is rapidly absorbed in the intestine, goes to the liver, where it is converted into triglycerides, contributing to fat accumulation and the development of insulin resistance. Additional research shows that regular consumption of sugary drinks increases the risk of metabolic syndrome, a complex of conditions including obesity, high blood pressure and high blood sugar levels.
The medical recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) and national dietary guidelines advise limiting the daily intake of free sugar to 10% of the total caloric content, optimally — no more than 5%. For a diet with 2,000 calories, this means that the daily sugar intake should not exceed 50 grams, but it is better to stay within 25 grams.
Each serving of a sugary drink is taken into account by the body and affects metabolism, fat deposition and the risk of disease, which makes sugar intake control critically important for health.
The British charity Heart UK has learned that almost half of all adults in England have above-average cholesterol levels, while the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 1 in 10 Americans (34 million people) have cholesterol levels exceeding the high mark of 240 mg/dl.
