Uralvagonzavod has developed the Solntsepek on the T-80 chassis
The Uralvagonzavod concern has developed a version of the TOS-1A Solntsepek heavy flamethrower system based on the T-80 tank. This was announced on September 14 by the company's CEO Alexander Potapov.
"Bright memory to Kirillov, the chief (of the RCBZ troops Igor Kirillov — Ed.), who passed away, under his leadership, the development of new machines was actually started as soon as possible on another base <...> on the T-80," Potapov said, quoted by TASS.
According to the CEO, the new version of the system has received a number of improvements that provide greater range, accuracy and an increased level of automation.
Potapov called the TOS-1A Solntsepek an extremely popular machine built on the chassis of T-72 or T-90 tanks. The CEO added that the Solntsepeks proved themselves so successful that "there is a real hunt for them," so now the cars are equipped with additional protection from drones.
On July 11, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation showed footage of the combat operation of the TOS-1A Solntsepek. It was clarified that the calculation of the upgraded heavy flamethrower system struck the launch areas of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and the command post of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Red Army area of the special military operation zone. It is noted that the coordinates for the strike were obtained from intelligence units.
