Dentin hypersensitivity is one of the most common dental problems that causes pain when exposed to temperature changes, acidic or sweet foods, as well as mechanical stress. More than half of adults experience symptoms of hypersensitivity, with more than a third of cases diagnosed clinically. This is stated in the journal Nature.

Hypersensitivity occurs when the dentine tubules — small, fluid—filled channels that connect the outer surface of the tooth to the internal nerves - become exposed to the external environment. This causes fluid to move in the tubules, activating nerve endings and causing pain.

To solve this problem, researchers are looking for structural solutions that restore the protective barrier that protected dentin from hypersensitivity. One such solution is the use of calcium-sodium-phosphosilicate bioactive glass, originally developed for bone repair.

"If we want to get rid of dermatitis at the root, we need to actively restore sensitive areas. The open dentinal tubules leading directly to the tooth pulp help explain why dentine can be felt so intensely. The challenge is to restore the natural sealing that once protected these microscopic tubules," said Adam Sisson, head of Global Oral Health Research and Development at Haleon.

Experts note that to reduce sensitivity, it is important to follow a few simple rules: avoid excessive brushing of teeth, reduce the consumption of acidic and sweet foods, maintain a pH balance in the oral cavity and monitor the condition of the enamel and gums. It is recommended to pay special attention to the preservation of the natural protective barrier of dentin, which prevents the exposure of nerve endings and increases the resistance of teeth to external stimuli.

An integrated approach to oral care includes not only eating habits and proper brushing of teeth, but also attention to individual characteristics such as the composition of the microbiota and general behavioral habits. Regular assessment of the condition of the teeth and timely detection of signs of erosion or hypersensitivity allow timely measures to be taken and maintain oral health.

On July 16, Olga Albova, a dentist at the Dentistoff clinic, named the cause of bleeding gums when brushing her teeth. As the expert explained, the main cause of bleeding is plaque, which accumulates pathogens.
