The Anti-Corruption Court of Appeal in Yerevan has left businessman Samvel Karapetyan under arrest, rejecting the petition of his defense. This was announced on September 8 by his lawyer Aram Vardevanyan to Sputnik Armenia.

"The appeal, as you know, was considered in writing. The defense believes that the businessman's phrase "In his own way", expressed in defense of the Church against the background of attacks by the authorities, cannot be grounds for arrest," the newspaper's Telegram channel says.

In addition, the court rejected the request of the Prosecutor General's Office, which asked to confirm the well-founded suspicions of money laundering in the Karapetyan case.

Karapetyan's detention became known on June 18. He was detained for publicly expressing disagreement with the attacks on the Armenian Apostolic Church (APC), which came from the country's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. On the same day, the Investigative Committee of Armenia sent a petition to the court for Karapetyan's detention. He was charged with calling for the seizure of power in Armenia. After that, he was arrested for two months.

On July 3, the Armenian parliament adopted in the final reading laws allowing the nationalization of the company "Electric Networks of Armenia", which belongs to the detained businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan. The opposition expressed its disagreement, which considers the process illegal.

On July 15, the opposition political parties of the Armenian parliament appealed to the Constitutional Court (CC) demanding that the law on the nationalization of Karapetyan's Electric Grids be declared unconstitutional.

On July 23, Karapetyan defeated the Armenian government in the International Arbitration Court in the case of the nationalization of the "Electric Grids of Armenia", which belonged to him.
