The renewal of the Russian fishing fleet was discussed at the WEF
Russia should strive for full technological sovereignty in the fishing industry. This was announced on September 4 by Sergey Abdykerov, Director of the Department of Shipbuilding Industry and Marine Technology of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, at the session "Fleet of the XXI Century: technological Sovereignty or international cooperation?" Eastern Economic Forum — 2025 (WEF-2025).
"I believe that engineering should be 100% Russian. <...> And this is the thought from my two predecessors who spoke, that one should not harm [the industry] in pursuit of technological sovereignty — in no case should one harm the economy of the ordering industries," he said, responding in response to a question from REN TV presenter and session moderator Petr Marchenko.
According to Abdykerov, when the country began to update the fishing fleet, many thought that the best projects could be taken from foreign design bureaus. However, this led to a low-production situation, which affected both the cost and the construction time. The expert stressed that the mistake was that each customer of the vessel considered "his" project as the best.
Speaking about the development of fishing equipment, Abdykerov noted that over the past few years Russia has been able to master new segments, such as fish processing. He pointed out the importance of learning new competencies and returning to those technologies that have not been used in recent decades.
"We are learning to do something anew, we are remembering something that has not been done there conventionally for the last 15-20 years. Therefore, engineering comes first, and cooperation with foreign partners in terms of building the final vessel is also a possible story," Abdykerov concluded.
Earlier in the day, Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Alexander Poshivai said that Russia's priority is to develop its own potential in the field of shipbuilding and marine technologies. According to him, the actions in this area over the past two years have demonstrated that the flexibility of Russian ship and cargo owners is large enough to respond to sanctions packages.
