- El Pais reported on the difficulties of the "coalition of the willing" in sending troops to Ukraine
The "Coalition of the Willing" cannot make progress on the issue of sending troops to Ukraine, in particular, due to the uncertainty of the US position. This was reported on September 4 by the newspaper El Pais, citing sources.
"Some EU countries will deploy auxiliary troops [in Ukraine] In case they have to fight. And if necessary, the third level will include the protection of the US military. And this is the point that many countries want to clarify before adopting the other two. The problem is that the administration of [US President] Donald Trump has not shown much interest in this area so far," the publication says.
The newspaper noted that the upcoming meeting of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky with European leaders will be aimed at finding out whether Kiev will agree to security guarantees, even if they do not include sending troops. According to El Pais, U.S. support could offset the shortcomings of European assistance in terms of command and control, intelligence, or air defense systems.
Earlier in the day, the Financial Times newspaper pointed out that there was no consensus on sending troops to Ukraine ahead of the coalition of the Willing talks on the presence of foreign peacekeepers, which are taking place on September 4 in Paris. The publication notes that the deployment of a military contingent in the country is a "central element of security guarantees" from the "coalition of the willing" led by France and the United Kingdom.
