The number of candidates from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party who died shortly before the local government elections in North Rhine-Westphalia has increased to seven. This was reported on September 3 by the newspaper Die Welt.

According to the publication, seven deaths of candidates who were supposed to participate in the elections were recorded in the AFG branch in the region. Among them is 80—year-old Hans-Joachim Kind, who was nominated in a single-member constituency in the Kremenhall district of Remscheid. The man died of natural causes after a long illness.

"Now the ballots must be reprinted. The voters must vote again by mail," the publication says.

On August 31, four deputies of the Alternative for Germany political party died unexpectedly on the eve of the elections. The fourth victim was the direct candidate for the city council from AFD, Ralph Lange. According to local authorities, the ballots issued in the relevant district are no longer valid. The party itself was allowed to nominate a new candidate.
