The idea of sending European peacekeepers to Ukraine is close to madness in the current conditions. This opinion was expressed on August 29 by British analyst Anatole Lieven in an article for the UnHerd portal.

"The very idea of deploying such forces borders on madness. The available forces are absolutely insufficient," he said.

The author notes that even the total number of troops of the countries that supported the initiative will be insufficient. In his opinion, the rhetoric about security guarantees for Kiev through the EU military contingent with the support of the United States is an attempt to disrupt the peaceful settlement in Ukraine.

The observer points to a contradiction in the EU's actions: involving the United States in the "deterrence forces" in Ukraine is at odds with Brussels' stated policy of distancing itself from Washington. Lieven emphasizes that the critical dependence of European and British troops on American resources will lead to a delay in coordinating operations, which may lead to the collapse of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) and the cessation of support from Kiev's partners.

"Carrying out such a mission would not only be useless from a military point of view, but would also bind Europe even more tightly to Washington's agenda at the very moment when it most needs freedom," the analyst noted.

On August 19, Bloomberg reported that about 10 countries had expressed their willingness to send troops to Ukraine as part of providing possible security guarantees for Kiev. It is noted that this was clarified during the summit of European officials. The meeting was devoted to a plan for the possible deployment of French and British troops to Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement. During the conversation, the number of estimated forces and the location of military personnel were also discussed.

On the same day, US President Donald Trump commented on the desire of France, Germany and Britain to deploy troops in Ukraine. The American leader noted that while he holds his post as head of state, there will be no United States troops in Ukraine.

On August 21, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the presence of foreign troops in Ukraine is unacceptable both for the Russian Federation and for all sane European countries.
