- Ukrainian chess player Shevchenko was stripped of his grandmaster title due to cheating
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) Ethics and Discipline Commission has stripped Ukrainian Kirill Shevchenko of his grandmaster title for cheating at the Spanish team championship. This was announced by the FIDE press service on August 29.
"The appeals board unanimously decided that Kirill Shevchenko's appeal was not satisfied and the guilt was confirmed," the statement on the organization's website says.
Grandmaster Shevchenko was found guilty under Article 11.7 (e) of the FIDE Disciplinary Code. He was given the following sanctions: a three-year ban from participating in all FIDE-rated tournaments from October 19, 2024 to October 18, 2026, and the revocation of the grandmaster title. One year of the ban has been suspended, provided there are no further violations until October 18, 2027.
"FIDE takes cases of fraud among leading players very seriously. We are working diligently on both prevention and swift, adequate sanctions. Ensuring fair play is non—negotiable — it is essential for the credibility of our sport and its future," said Dana Reizniece, Deputy Chairman of the Board of FIDE.
It is noted that the measures reflect the efforts of the federation's divisions, including Fair Play, Arbitrators and Ethics, to improve violation detection systems, improve preventive training and ensure rapid disciplinary response.
In December 2024, Norwegian chess player Magnus Carlsen, who was disqualified by FIDE for violating the dress code at the Rapid World Championship, said that the sports federation had no right to set its own rules. The former world chess champion noted that he no longer intends to participate in tournaments under the auspices of FIDE.
