The Austrian Consulate told about the fate of the climber who tried to save Nagovitsina

Mountaineer Gunther Sigmund, who tried to rescue Russian Natalia Nagovitsina, who was stuck on Victory Peak, is in Germany and is undergoing treatment. The Austrian Consulate in Kyrgyzstan informed Izvestia about this on August 26.

According to the consulate, Sigmund is a German citizen. He went to rescue the Russian woman together with the Italian climber Luca Sinigaglia, who later died of cerebral edema.

"At the moment, he (Sigmund. — Ed.) is located in his own country. While climbing Pobedy Peak, he suffered frostbite on his limbs and nose, which was recorded by Kyrgyz doctors on Tuesday, August 19. On Wednesday, August 20, he flew home and is now being monitored by his doctors," the Austrian consulate said.

Earlier, Izvestia sent a request to the German Embassy regarding Sigmund's condition, but the diplomatic mission did not provide information, citing the protection of personal data.

The fact that 47-year-old Nagovitsina was stuck at Victory Peak was reported on August 19 in the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan. She broke her leg during the descent and has been at altitude for about two weeks. Vera Belikova, the administrator of the Karkyr base camp, said that Nagovitsina is a very strong and calm person. She has already had experience of climbing mountain peaks in the past, and many climbers know her.

On August 23, it became known that Italian climber Luca Sinigaglia, who tried to save Nagovitsina, suffered frostbite on his right hand and subsequently died of cerebral edema. On the same day, the head of the mountaineering base camp, Dmitry Grekov, announced that the operation to rescue the climber had been completed to date. He added that not a single person had been evacuated from Victory Peak since 1955.
