During a telephone conversation, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Masoud Peseshkian thanked Russian Leader Vladimir Putin for Moscow's firm position on Tehran's right to enrich uranium. This was announced on August 25 by the press service of the Iranian president on its website.

"Iran has never sought to build nuclear weapons, does not seek and will not seek to build nuclear weapons based on its ideological foundations and defense doctrine," Peseshkian said.

The Russian President, in turn, stressed that Iran's right to enrich uranium is key and final from Russia's point of view. He expressed hope that negotiations on the issue of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution 2231, which establishes international control over Iran's nuclear program, will lead to a positive conclusion.

Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, said on August 19 that Iran, Russia and China had discussed the countries' cooperation with Britain, France and Germany on the nuclear deal. He noted that as a result of the negotiations, the countries came to the conclusion that the UN Security Council resolution 2231 was illegal.

Prior to that, on August 13, France, Great Britain and Germany expressed their readiness to re-impose sanctions against Iran if the Islamic Republic does not resume negotiations with the international community on its nuclear doctrine.
