Iron deficiency affects up to a third of women, remaining the most common nutritional deficiency in the world. This was reported in the BBC Science Focus magazine.

It is specified that iron is necessary for energy production, normal brain function and maintenance of the immune system. According to the World Health Organization, anemia is detected in 31% of women of reproductive age, 36% of pregnant women and 40% of children under five years of age.

The publication emphasizes that inflammatory processes that occur in acute or chronic diseases, including obesity, can reduce the absorption of this trace element. Iron deficiency leads to a decrease in hemoglobin levels and the development of anemia, accompanied by pale skin, fatigue, shortness of breath, rapid or irregular heartbeat. It increases the risk of complications during pregnancy and childbirth, stunted growth and brain development in children, and mortality among mothers and infants.

Menstruating women, pregnant women, children, and adolescents are most at risk. In these groups, the need for iron is higher due to monthly blood loss, fetal development, or intensive growth.

Oral preparations of the trace element are called the main method of treating iron deficiency. For people with side effects such as nausea or constipation, experts recommend taking them every other day. In severe forms of tablet deficiency or intolerance, intravenous iron administration is possible.

In addition, experts noted that many cases of deficiency can be prevented through nutrition. The diet should include foods rich in iron, such as legumes, green leafy vegetables, seeds, nuts, and iron—fortified cereals. A moderate amount of red meat can also be a source of an easily digestible trace element. With a plant-based diet, the absorption of iron is facilitated by the combination of such foods with sources of vitamin C, such as lemon juice or berries.

Doctors have warned that tea and coffee containing polyphenols may interfere with the absorption of this element.

On August 6, pediatrician, nutritionist, and SOLGAR expert Maria Kulikova spoke about the dangers of completely eliminating fats from the diet. According to her, they are one of the key macronutrients along with carbohydrates and proteins. Fats perform many vital functions, such as energy, as they are a concentrated source of energy, providing 9 calories per gram.
