The holes on the nails (lunules) can serve as an indicator of various diseases. However, their absence is not a sign of pathology, since they can form later in children, and in some people, due to individual characteristics, they do not appear at all. Kirill Masliev, Candidate of Medical Sciences, member of the State Council Commission on Active Long-term Life, Head of the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Rudn University, founder of the Heroes Charitable Foundation, told Izvestia about this on August 15.

"If the lunules were present and suddenly disappeared, this may indicate problems with the cardiovascular system, hormonal disorders, or vitamin B12 deficiency," Masliev said.

He stressed that the mechanism of interrelation in anemia or leukemia is a violation of blood microcirculation, which is why iron and other nutrients do not reach the nail plates in sufficient quantities.

The expert drew attention to the fact that the external manifestations of these diseases vary: with anemia, skin pallor, weakness and dizziness are observed, whereas with leukemia, lymph nodes increase, periodic bleeding occurs, fever rises and cases of diseases become more frequent.

Among other alarming symptoms that may accompany the disappearance of the holes, Masliev called the deterioration of the skin, hair loss and increased fatigue.

"All these diseases are treated in different ways, so it makes no sense to diagnose your nails yourself - with such changes, you should consult a doctor," the specialist concluded.

On July 30, Alexandra Fileva, an expert at the Hemotest Laboratory, told Izvestia that if there are no holes on the nails, it is worth checking the heart. In addition, a similar situation can occur with atherosclerosis, when cholesterol deposits reduce the lumen of blood vessels and make their walls more rigid.

All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
