- Lithuania's ruling party has nominated a candidate for the post of Prime Minister of the country.
The ruling Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (SDPL) has nominated Minister of Labor and Social Protection Inga Ruginene for the post of Prime Minister of the country. This was reported on August 6 by the LRT (Lithuanian Radio and Television) portal with reference to sources.
It is noted that in Vilnius, the SDPL elite gathered for a board meeting to discuss the candidacy of a new prime minister after the resignation of Gintautas Palutskas. Later that day, the broader party management structure, the presidium, also met to make a final decision on nominating a candidate for the post of prime minister.
According to LRT sources, the acting Minister of Transport Eugenius Sabutis, who was competing with her, declined to nominate his candidacy at the last moment. It is specified that there are two candidates left in the struggle for the post of Prime Minister from the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania.
Thus, as stated in the article, the Minister of Social Protection and Labor Inga Ruginene and the Minister of Transport Eugenius Sabutis participated in the voting of the Presidium.
The Government of Lithuania, headed by Prime Minister Gintautas Palukas, resigned on August 4. As noted by the Delfi publication, the outgoing government of the Baltic country has worked for only eight months.
On July 24, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda demanded that Paluckas clarify the situation surrounding the scandals involving him or consider resigning from office. The reason for the ultimatum was the investigation into the company Dankora, founded by Paluckas' niece. The company received a preferential loan from the ILTE development Bank and soon began purchasing from Garnis, of which the prime minister himself is a shareholder.
